Living among reflections.

The project consists of the refurbishment of an apartment that had lost its penthouse qualities since its terraces had been glazed (without any functional advantage), and where the space was too fragmented because of the existing layout.

First we removed the added glazing and made the south façade much lighter. Inside, we organized the layout around a continuous central space, according to Client’s needs. Everything with the purpose of getting the clearest possible space and incorporate the terrace as a part of the apartment. In order to do so, pavement and ceiling got materialized in the form of two white reflecting continuous planes: a polyurethane flooring system that assures the inside-outside continuity and a PVC stretched ceiling that extends outside as an aluminum sheet cornice to shelter the south glazing.

A sort of islands of similar geometries were inserted on these planes. On the floor they are used to mark out the main functional areas (teak flooring deck system in the living/dining areas and a local stone in the bathroom), and on the ceiling they gather the lighting elements together and, occasionally, the air grilles. Two black lacquered glass walls and a continuous walnut wood strip enclose the space vertically. The free standing pillars, which turned up because of the layout alterations, were cladded with perforated steel sheet and became lighting elements.

This repetition of geometries and color, enhanced by the reflecting finishing of the floor and the ceiling suggest the specular image that characterizes the project.
