INTERIOR RENOVATION IN CUATRO ESQUINAS
Murcia, 2025
The apartment is located in the building La Alegría de la Huerta, an eclectic 1920s work by Juan Antonio Rodríguez. Its heritage value lies in the expressive façade of continuous balconies, bay windows, and distinctive woodwork, all of which have been restored with full respect for the original design.
The interior intervention proposes a comprehensive renovation based on a dialogue with the building’s historical architecture. A large open space organizes the apartment as a continuous room, onto which curved “bubbles” — autonomous volumes of varying heights — are placed to house the master bedroom, bathroom, and dressing room. These elements appear to float, wrapped in lush vegetation that extends into the living room, creating an immersive atmosphere.
The living room and kitchen share a single, fluid space, crowned by plasterboard vaults that reinterpret the original ceiling with new materials. Lines of light travel across these vaults and through the bubbles, merging with the greenery to emphasize spatial continuity.
A microcement floor runs throughout the apartment, interrupted only by rugs of carefully restored original hydraulic tiles. The woodwork has been faithfully reproduced using hybrid systems that replicate the original aesthetic while incorporating modern thermal and acoustic insulation standards, without compromising character.
The bubbles, clad in materials such as milled wood or golden mirror trencadís, are conceived as fine joinery pieces. Their white, textured interiors offer a serene refuge where curves intertwine across ceilings and walls, turning each corner into a meticulously crafted spatial experience.
